Top Priority: Protecting and empowering my team

My top priority as Director of Research & Development at the Mennel Milling Company is the safety of my R&D team. In fact, I do not consider the safety of my team to be simply a priority. Rather, I consider it to be a fundamental value. Priorities can and do change, but values do not. Related to my value of team safety is team well-being. It is incumbent upon me to ensure my team has a proper work-life balance and that I am doing all I can as their leader to help promote a healthy mental attitude. My perspective is that we work to live; we should not live to work. Work is simply a vehicle that provides the income needed to sustain our homes and families. While particularly important, it is never more important than those we work to support. As such, it is my responsibility to effectively manage my team’s time, promoting proper balance between work and personal or leisure activities and regularly checking in with my team to ensure that they are in a healthy place mentally and physically. This type of leadership results in higher productivity, elevated levels of trust and reduced employee turnover.

Identifying Opportunities: Customer input and team evaluation

In most instances, new product opportunities come from customer requests. A cross-functional leadership team then evaluates these requests. If the request makes it through the vetting process, R&D will begin developing prototypes. In other instances, opportunities for process improvement may be identified by our FSQR team and/ or our Operations team and presented to R&D for remediation.

Case Study: Mix innovation for global bakery brand

A major international bakery/foodservice customer approached Mennel about blending prepared mixes for them and asked Mennel R&D to ideate a dozen or so new concepts for them in their core competency. The R&D team developed these concepts and presented them to the customer. Two of the concepts presented were selected by the customer’s Commercialization team for future LTO products and one of the concepts was commercialized in the first half of 2025. In addition, they also selected Mennel to be a primary vender of their core product line.

R&D Evolution: Accelerating ideas to market

Technology plays a vital role in the product development process. Staying current with equipment, processing and ingredient technologies is critical to the Mennel Innovation strategy. In addition, the arrival of AI has created a new paradigm for product development as this tool can be used to analyze and interpret data, design experiments and improve overall speed to market.
